» Security Warning: CGers on Neopets

Watch out everyone: there is currently an exploit on Neopets where cookie grabbers can be inserted into user shops (within the Neopets.com site). Other user-editable areas (userlookups, guild pages, petpages, etc) could be affected as well, though shops appear to be the main offenders at the moment.

Scammers are attracting people to bugged shops by putting cheap items (e.g. codestones at 1 NP) which show up on Shop Wizard but cannot be purchased.

    Shop Wizard

Please be wary of going to shops with too-good-to-sound-true deals. If you think you've been CG'd, see our last news post for what to do. You can also find more information at Jellyneo's news post or Sunnyneo's news post.

    » Server vs. Squiby

We are expecting bouts of sporadic downtime this week. Some of it will be due to routine maintenance and backups; you may have noticed last weekend we updated our statistics so the percentages are now up-to-date for June.

The other contributing factor is that Avatarlog is currently sharing a server with Squiby, a site where you can upload and create your own adoptables. Squiby serves a lot of traffic due to its popularity so it has been particularly taxing on the shared resources! *gives Bob the Server a pat and a Red Bull*

    » RSS Feed

We have an experimental RSS Feed established for Avatarlog news. The address is:

    http://avatar.starried.net/rss/

I have been testing the feed with Google Reader, so if you encounter problems with the feed using other RSS services, kindly let us know! :)

    » Security Bulletin

There have been security concerns raised this week such as the "Fake Tarla" links that have been hitting the Neoboards. Here are a few security bulletins to help keep you safe:

» Firefox users should install NoScript.

The NoScript plugin for Firefox detects instances where Javascript from an external source (e.g. cookie grabbers) has been inserted onto a site. NoScript will nullify the foreign script for safety, preventing it from running.

After you install the plugin, be sure to whitelist and allow scripts from Neopets.com. Editorial 379 has okayed the use of NoScript when playing Neo so long as you permit scripts from the Neopets.com domain.

» Never use the same password for multiple sites.

If your Avatarlog password is the same as your password to any other website, change it now!! (This means you!)

You should never use the same password for multiple sites, regardless of whether it is an account for Neopets, your email, Twitter, BPSAA*, a blog, your Power Rangers Fan Club account, or anything else.

Make up a completely new, separate password for each site. Strong passwords contain a mix of numbers, letters of both cases, and characters (like !#@$%) and should not be based on a dictionary word. Microsoft (surprise o.o) has a fairly good guide on how to create a secure yet memorable password.

    *Black Pawkeet Slots Addicts Anonymous

If you think you have been cookie-grabbed, the first thing to do is change your password.

Changing your Neopets password will invalidate the cookie that was "grabbed." (You should NOT change your password back after a few weeks because you think the harm has passed: changing it back to the old password could cause the grabbed cookie to be valid again.) Many people say the first thing to do is log out -- doing so only gives the thief more time to lock YOU out first.

    Use a PIN!

Add a PIN to anything and everything you can. A grabbed cookie does not store your PIN, so unless your email account is compromised too, PIN offers an extra layer of security for your Neopets assets.

    » Altador Cup

The Altador Cup Player avatar that was released last year is now available again!

It is achieved by reaching Rank/Level 1 in the currently ongoing Altador Cup. You can find this avatar filed under Event avatars.

    » Hyperventilate: A new avatar??

Could it be... a new avatar?!

The new Mutant Graveyard of Doom avatar is available from achieving a certain score/level in the related game.

Update: Confirmed minimum avatar score is 2,250.

We have reports of 2,240 NOT working and all scores 2,250 and above working.

If you have information contrary to this minimum avatar score, please let us know!

A big thanks to everyone who submitted their scores to help us narrow it down, and thanks to ava_ked for providing me with the official avatar name.

    Something Has Happened!
You are now eligible to use 'Mutant Graveyard of Doom' as an avatar on the NeoBoards!

Tip for the game - in each level, remember to knock out the enemies! Each hit scores 50 points, which will easily add up to 2250 after five or six levels! Press spacebar next to the plain gravestones in order to knock them over. You can knock out both petpets and the enemy gravestones that move.

Update: Hey, it looks like the avatar name has been changed! :) There is now a "II" at the end to differentiate it from the other Mutant Graveyard of Doom avatar. Thanks TNT!

Also... Dear TNT: please rename this avatar to something different. The other Graveyard of Doom avatar has the EXACT same official name! You're going to confuse all the ACers :(

» The Buzzer Game: New Game Code

Still need The Buzzer Game avatar? Here's a helpful new(ly revealed) game code to use!

Type the code cheese at the beginning of the first level.

A little jingle should play and you can now see your mouse position for the rest of the game!

With this code, the game becomes more a matter of patience and steady hands, rather than having to guess where your (previously hidden) cursor is and if it might hit the wire edge :) Enjoy and good luck for those getting the avatar!

I haven't seen this code on any other main guides, so you saw it here first on Avatarlog *wink* ;)

If you add/share/submit this code to another site, kindly and respectfully give credit to bob13p, who was the first to inform Avlog about the code! Thanks so much Bob! :D

    » Snuffly Avatar Update

Many thanks to SunnyNeo for figuring out that a Snuffly must be attached for 300+ days in order to give out the related avatar.

We've known for a long time that some minimum age is required (as not all attached Snufflies would give out the avatar) but it's great to finally have an exact age! Thanks Sunnyneo :)

    » Darigan Pteri Avatar

Update: This Pteri is no longer of age.

Still need the Darigan Pteri avatar? There is one Pteri that is aged at 644 days and will be giving out the avatar until approximately 1am:

    Pteri
    Visit carolinagijsberta!

You can add the avatar to your Avatarlog list by clicking "Toggle to Have" at the bottom of our indepth guide.

    » IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTICE

Edit/Update: The server of our affiliate, Neoitems, was compromised a few days ago and yesterday we detected a suspicious snippet of code on their homepage. Neoitems has addressed the security threat and their forums should be safe to browse now :)

    Chia Police

I would highly recommend anyone using Firefox to install the NoScript plugin. This plugin will warn you and disable cross-site scripting attacks, which most (but not all) cookie grabbers employ.

    » Planned Downtime: Next Weekend

We will be anticipating some site downtime next weekend (April 25-26th) to do some overall website and database maintenance. The site and guides may be inaccessible for up to 24 hours, but we will try to keep the avatar search/solutions available :)

Also, final projects/exam season is just around the corner for me, so updates and replies to support emails may be on the slow side.

    Ahhh, the horror!

ps. The 1000th Caption Contest is in full swing and will end shortly, so be sure to vote for your favorite captions! (Amazingly, not one, but TWO, Avatarlog guild members have captions in! Be sure to check out twiddlefish and [anonymous]'s entries!)

Posted by starry; Sunday Apr. 19th @ 9:03:01 am NST

    » 1000th Caption Image

The upcoming Caption Contest (after the current one ends) will be number 1000! This provides a rare opportunity to get the Caption Contest - Funny avatar, which is only available every 100th contest.

The winning captions receive the following avatar:

Here's a sneak peek at the caption contest image, courtesy of our friends at Jellyneo:

    Caption 1000

Better start coming up with some clever captions now! Speaking from past experience, I would recommend looking at older winning captions to get a feel for the kind of things that TNT finds clever and amusing :) Also remember that you can submit more than one caption.

The 1000th Caption Contest should officially begin accepting entries on Tuesday the 14th. Good luck to everyone trying!

» Grundo Warehouse and Easter Avatar

I've gotten a few messages saying that the Grundo Warehouse avatar has been retired because the "10-digit code" box is no longer on the page.

However, this is untrue because the 10-digit code box is still there -- just set to "display: none" in the CSS of the webpage.

    I'm still available!!

To show the 10-digit box in order to get the avatar:

    1. Turn CSS off in your browser. Go to the Grundo Warehouse. Now turn off CSS: in Firefox, you can do this with View > Page Style > No Style. In IE, View > Style > No Style. In other browsers, look for a similar menu set or look for the option to turn off CSS under Tools > Options (or equivalent).

With CSS off, the 10-digit code box should now be visible, and you can enter the code A384J-228P1 to receive the avatar (if you don't have it already!)

    2. Use Javascript to show the 10-digit code box. Go to the Grundo Warehouse. While on that page, go to your address bar and delete everything there (the http:// blah blah). Then copy and paste ONE of the following codes into the (empty) address bar and hit enter. This should run a Javascript snippet that causes the 10-digit code box to be displayed on the page, rather than hidden.

    USE THIS:

Thanks to haettr for locating this original show() function that was used before the page update!

    OR THIS:

For the interested web monkeys: We're calling on the "document" element of the page, selecting the item with the ID of "ten_code" (the DIV that is currently hidden). Then, we access its "style" object and the "display" property inside the style object, setting its value to "block" (which means 'show') as opposed to "none" (which means 'hidden'). The void(0) at the end prevents the page from refreshing.

IMPORTANT: I don't know if TNT has approved of dynamic Javascript snippets like this for the purpose of showing a DIV that was on the page in the first place. Please use this option at your own judgment (or just try option #1).

TNT -- if you have qualms with this workaround, kindly email the Avatarlog staff or remove the 10-digit code DIV entirely from the page :)

If you have trouble using either of these methods, make sure you don't already have the avatar! Further problems can be sent to us using this form.

    » Easter Cybunny Avatar

In case you didn't catch our avatar alert yesterday, the Easter Cybunny avatar should still be available until April 10th! (This was the date range of the original Easter weekend the year this avatar was first released.)

To get this avatar, send the Happy Easter NeoGreeting to someone.

You are now eligible to use 'Easter Cybunny' as an avatar on the NeoBoards!

    » Quiguki April Fools

The Quiguki April Fools avatar is now available, today the 4th of April. Thanks to everyone who sent in submissions to let us know it has been activated!

Stop by the New Features page to get this seasonal avatar.

You are now eligible to use 'Quiguki April Fools Avatar' as an avatar on the NeoBoards!

To mark off this avatar on your Avatarlog checklist, click on the avatar image in the event above. This pops up our QuickFacts window, where you can click "Toggle to Have".

    Neoplants begone!

Random Trivia: Aside from Avatar Collector, this is the only other secret avatar so far to have a redundant "Avatar" in its official name. So it's a little awkward saying "the Quiguki April Fools Avatar avatar"... :)
